BIBS Study

Bupropion Intervention for Baby’s Sake

Cigarette smoking during pregnancy is one of the most important modifiable causes of poor pregnancy outcomes in the US.  It approximately doubles the risk of spontaneous abortion, placental complications, premature rupture of membranes, and preterm delivery. Bupropion is a commonly prescribed antidepressant with few side effects that also aids in smoking cessation. This study will include 360 women between 13-24 pregnant who also regularly smoke. BIBS will randomize women to bupropion or placebo and will monitor smoking cessation, medication adherence and pregnancy outcomes.
